Juice Cleanse 101

So you decided to do a juice cleanse?  Well I first would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you on your decision.  Juice cleanses are a great way to reset and detoxify the body.

Over the years I have done countless juice cleanses and have learned some valuable tricks to get the most benefits out of them.  So, here are some tips to hopefully make your juice cleansing experience enjoyable and easy!

Before The Cleanse:

The first thing you should do before starting any cleanse is to LOOK AT YOUR CALENDAR!  Yes, look at your calendar.  Choose the days that would be most convenient for you to do a cleanse.  You shouldn’t schedule your cleanse for a week when you know you have a big event coming up; especially if this event is going to involve food.  For instance, you shouldn’t schedule your 3-day cleanse 3-days before the Superbowl.  You are more than likely going to negate a lot of the benefits you would have gained from the cleanse, while snacking on those delicious Superbowl snacks.  So, set yourself up for success and choose the right time for YOU!  That said I personally recommend starting a cleanse on a Monday and/or during your workdays.  I found that it is much harder to stick with a cleanse when you have a lot of free time; not eating ANYTHING when you have free time is downright awful!

A healthy diet, before even starting the cleanse, can make the world of difference.  In the 3-4 days prior to your cleanse you want to bring your body to a more alkaline state.  To do this try to eliminate or significantly reduce the following acid forming foods:

  • Alcohol
  • Caffeine (if you MUST have coffee opt for black coffee)
  • Dairy
  • Refined sugar (including corn syrup, white sugar, and powdered sugars)
  • Animal products (especially red meat)
  • Gluten
  • Processed foods (any foods that typically come in a box or bag and contain more than one item on the list of ingredients can be considered processed).

Sticking to a healthy diet before the cleanse can help ease hunger cravings and detox symptoms during the cleanse.

Last but not least before starting your juice cleanse KNOW YOUR GOALS! Write down all your reasons for starting this journey so you can reference them whenever the cleanse gets tough.

“Our Intention creates reality.”

During The Cleanse:

Try and stick with having 100% juice during your cleanse, as eating slows down the juice cleansing process.  However, some juice cleanse companies do recommend snacking on raw fruits and vegetables when needed.  My advice is to listen to your body and your intuition.  If you do need to eat during your cleanse opt for organic fruits and vegetables or soaked nuts and seeds.  Many cleanses also lack sodium so adding a touch of salt to your diet during the cleanse is often necessary.

During the juice cleanse your body will be working hard to release the toxins built up inside.  Therefore, you may experience detox symptoms that include lack of energy, headaches, aches, irritation, anxiety, and diarrhea, among others.  The severity of this symptoms will be different for everyone and all depends on the amount of toxins inside your body.  Don’t panic if you start to experience any of these symptoms just make sure you are getting enough sleep and relaxation.  Also don’t forget to drink up buttercup! Drinking up to 62 oz of water a day will help flush out the toxins faster, which will relieve some of the detox symptoms.

Exercise should be limited during your cleanse as rigorous exercise might be too much for your body to handle.  Go for light gentle exercises, such walks, yoga, and stretching to relax your body and mind.  As always pay attention to what your body needs and take care of yourself.  If you do not feel up to exercise try doing some introspective activities like mediating, reading a book, journaling, or listening to music.  My favorite things to do during a cleansing period is to go get a facial and manicure and pedicure.

On a final note, I do recognize that breaking a coffee habit is hard! If you are a coffee lover, it is okay to incorporate small amounts of black coffee into your juice cleanse.  Just be sure to drink ample water!

After The Cleanse:

After you finish your cleanse, first give yourself a pat on the back…but now it is time to transition into a healthy lifestyle.  Although you might want to bite into a juicy burger and have some wine after your cleanse, you do not want to overload your body.  For the past few days your body has worked hard to detoxify itself.  Introducing these types of foods into your body may actually cause negative sides effects.

Return gradually to eating solid foods after your juice cleanse.  During the three days after completing your juice cleanse you should incorporate habits from your pre-cleanse and cleanse program to continue supporting your health and wellness.  Try to continue eating healthy by adding more raw organic fruits and green vegetables to your diet.  On the second day after your cleanse feel free to add brown rice, eggs, and yogurt.  5-6 days after the cleanse you can start adding in chicken, fish, and other meats.  Also remember to drink lots of water!

Don’t jump into any strenuous or exhausting activities right after your juice cleanse. Continue to take time to relax and reflect on the experience you just had.  Use this juice cleanse experience as a way to kick start or reinforce healthy eating habits.
